The Management of Veterinary Drugs course equips learners with essential knowledge and practical skills for the safe, effective, and responsible use of veterinary medicines in livestock and companion animal systems. The course covers key areas including drug classification, prescription principles, dosage calculation, storage, handling, withdrawal periods, pharmacovigilance, antimicrobial resistance, and regulatory frameworks applicable in Rwanda. It aims to promote rational drug use to improve animal health and welfare while ensuring food safety, public health, and environmental protection.
Upon completion, learners gain competencies to manage veterinary drugs in compliance with legal and ethical standards and to advise farmers on proper drug use. The course positively impacts students by enhancing professional readiness and employability, supports farmers through improved animal productivity and reduced losses, protects consumers by ensuring safe animal products, and contributes to environmental sustainability by minimizing drug misuse and contamination.

Module Title: Infectious diseases control
Module code: ANHID601
Sector: Agriculture and food processing
Sub-sector: Animal health.
REQF Level: 6, Year II
Semester: I
Total credits: 12
Academic year: 2025-2026
Purpose statement
This module describes the skills and knowledge required to prepare preliminary activities for a Veterinary Technician Assistant to, identify and select material, tools and equipment, prepare and manipulate material tools and equipment, identify pathogenic microorganisms, describe infectious diseases, perform treatment and prevention of infectious diseases
Infectious diseases constitute a serious threat of animal health and production in many countries especially in developing countries; where veterinary drugs, required infrastructures and skilled workers are not sufficient. Frequent, morbidity and mortality rates are very high, resulting in economic losses thus reducing the production.
As the majority of the population of Rwanda is depending on agriculture, the government, in its priorities, decided to promote agriculture sector and the human resource strengthening is one of important strategies.
The primary objective of this module is to provide the knowledge and skills necessary to veterinary technician(s); this will help her (them) in animal health management for farm animals. This module treats only common infectious diseases caused by different agents including bacteria, viruses and microscopic fungi.
