
Material Science is the branch of engineering that studies the structure, properties, processing, performance, and applications of materials used in industry and everyday life. The course covers the classification of materials such as metals, polymers, ceramics, and composites; atomic structure and bonding; crystal structures; mechanical properties including strength, hardness, toughness, and ductility; material testing methods; phase diagrams and phase transformations; heat treatment processes; corrosion and its prevention; and the selection of appropriate materials for engineering applications. By understanding how a material’s structure influences its behavior, students gain the knowledge and skills needed to evaluate, process, and select materials that meet specific performance, safety, quality, and cost requirements in engineering and manufacturing environments.
