This is a core module which introduces learners to the fundamental principles and practices of road pavement design. The module describes the performance outcomes, skills, knowledge, and attitudes required to perform basic pavement design tasks in line with engineering standards and sustainable road construction practices.
Learners will acquire:
-
Knowledge of pavement structure, material properties, traffic loading, subgrade behavior, and environmental influences on pavement performance.
-
Skills to analyze soil data, select suitable pavement types, determine pavement layer thicknesses, and apply standard design methods like empirical and mechanistic-empirical approaches.
-
Attitudes that emphasize accuracy, professional ethics, safety consciousness, cost-effectiveness, and environmental responsibility in pavement design.
