This course covers power electronic devices, methods of protection, different types of converters and DC and AC motor control.

Knowledge and Understanding

Having successfully completed the module, students should be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:

 The characteristics of solid state devices used in power electronic applications, explains the performance of different types of converters, choppers and regulators and studies different types of motor control.

Intellectual skills/Application of Knowledge

 Having successfully completed the module, students should be able to:

Describe the basic conditions for successful commutation of power electronic devices for the purpose of using them in different converters as controlled rectifier, DC and AC chopper and inverter circuits.  The application of power electronic converters in speed control of DC and AC motors.
