Technical Drawing Fundamentals

Course Summary: The Technical Drawing Fundamentals course is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of mechanical drawing techniques, tools, and materials. The course aims to develop students' skills in creating accurate and detailed drawings using both traditional mechanical drawing instruments and computer-aided design (CAD) software. Students will learn to apply appropriate lines and symbols commonly used in technical drawings and gain proficiency in creating both two-dimensional and three-dimensional drawings.

Course Objectives:

  1. Familiarize with Mechanical Drawing Instruments, Materials, and Equipment:

    • Identify and handle various mechanical drawing instruments such as compasses, rulers, protractors, and set squares.
    • Understand the purpose and proper use of materials such as drawing paper, drafting pencils, erasers, and scales.
    • Learn how to operate drafting tables, T-squares, and other essential equipment.
  2. Application of Lines and Symbols Used in Drawing:

    • Gain knowledge of different line types, including visible lines, hidden lines, centerlines, construction lines, and dimension lines.
    • Understand the significance of line weights and apply appropriate line thicknesses in drawings.
    • Learn to use standard symbols for common elements such as dimensions, geometric shapes, fasteners, and electrical components.
  3. Perform Two-Dimensional Drawing:

    • Develop skills in creating accurate orthographic projections and isometric drawings.
    • Understand the principles of projection, including top view, front view, and side view.
    • Learn dimensioning techniques and apply proper scaling and annotation to communicate accurate information in the drawings.
  4. Perform Three-Dimensional Drawing:

    • Gain proficiency in creating three-dimensional objects using various methods, including manual sketching and CAD software.
    • Understand the principles of perspective drawing and apply them to represent objects realistically.
    • Learn to create exploded views and assembly drawings to illustrate the construction and assembly of complex objects.

Throughout the course, students will have hands-on practice sessions, exercises, and assignments to reinforce their understanding of technical drawing concepts. They will also have the opportunity to work on real-world projects, allowing them to apply their skills to practical situations. By the end of the course, students will be equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills to produce accurate and professional technical drawings using mechanical drawing instruments and CAD software.
